Penile Implant

Penile Implant (Penile Prosthesis)

A surgical penile implant, also known as a penile prosthesis, is an effective treatment option for men suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED), especially when other treatments such as medications or lifestyle changes have failed.

The simplest type of implant consists of bendable silicone rods placed inside the erection chambers of the penis. However, most men today prefer advanced inflatable penile implants, which allow a more natural-looking and controlled erection.

Who Needs a Penile Implant?

  • Men with severe erectile dysfunction not responding to medications
  • Cases with a clear medical cause such as diabetes or vascular disease
  • Men with penile curvature due to scarring (Peyronie’s disease)
  • Patients undergoing penile reconstruction surgery

How Does a Penile Implant Work?

The most commonly used type is the inflatable penile implant, which consists of three main components:

  • Cylinders: Placed inside the penis
  • Reservoir: Stores fluid and is placed under abdominal muscles
  • Pump: Positioned inside the scrotum between the testicles

When the pump is pressed, fluid moves from the reservoir into the cylinders, creating an erection. Pressing the deflation valve allows the fluid to return to the reservoir, making the penis soft again.

What is Sex Like with a Penile Implant?

  • Provides a firm and controlled erection suitable for intercourse
  • Feels natural in terms of stiffness and thickness
  • The head (glans) of the penis may not become as firm as in a natural erection
  • Sensation, orgasm, and ejaculation are usually not affected
  • Some men may notice a slight difference in length compared to natural erections

Effectiveness of Penile Implants

  • Success rate of approximately 90% to 95%
  • High patient satisfaction (around 80% to 90%)
  • Provides a long-term solution for erectile dysfunction
  • Allows spontaneity and improved confidence in sexual activity

Risks and Complications

Although penile implant surgery is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks:

  • Bleeding that may require additional surgery
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Implant erosion
  • Mechanical failure of the device
  • Displacement of pump or reservoir

Important Considerations

  • Natural erections may not occur after implantation
  • Removal of the implant may not restore natural erectile function
  • Requires proper counseling before surgery
  • Follow-up care is important for long-term success

Penile implants offer a reliable and effective solution for men with erectile dysfunction, significantly improving quality of life and restoring sexual confidence when other treatments are unsuccessful.
